HOW TO SAY NO WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY
Phase III: Saying No
• It sure looks delicious. I wish I had room for it,
• / really can't eat another bite.
• My taste buds are screaming yes, but my stomach is screaming no.
• ril explode if I eat another bite. But I definitely want to take some home. Will you make me up a doggy bag before I gof
• Mom, I know you want me to have more, but Vm full. Since food is your way of expressing love, why don't you give me a hug instead^
Special Diets
Dieters, vegetarians, and others on restricted diets for medical or religious reasons often find themselves in situations w^here they must turn down food that's being offered. When invited out, you can cope by snacking before you leave home or bringing along a dish you can eat. But that doesn't solve the problem of \iow to say "no thanks" to Grandma's roast beef v^ithout hurting her feelings. If you fear that the cook will be disappointed you're not joining in, it's appropriate to tip her off in advance to your new eating habits. Be gracious; don't expect her to cater to you, though she'll probably want to.
• Vve made a commitment to a new diet, so I won't be eating as much as I usually do over the holidays. I wanted to let you know in advance so you won't be surprised.
• I'm really looking forward to dinner at your house! I wanted to let you know that I've become a vegetarian. I hope that won't be a problem. (If the chef asks for suggestions, pasta is always a good choice.)
Offering to bring a dish is a gracious way of getting around the problem—and assuring you'll have something you like to eat.
• Can I bring a salad/side dish/dessertf
